The team behind the Assisted Suicide Comedy film A Good Day to Die is starting off 2013 with plans to open a production office in Roanoke, Va. on February 1st. The film, which will star Oscar and Emmy-winning actress Cloris Leachman, opens its new office to help facilitate the target of filming in April 2013, a goal made more pressing by the hope of receiving key tax incentives from the Virginia Film Office.
Co-Writer and Producer Andrea Shreeman made several visits to her hometown of Roanoke in 2012 along with A Good Day to Die Director, Emily Lou (The Selling). These trips resulted in the encouragement and backing of local government officials, business-minded citizens and regional media.
Thanks to a partnership with Roanoke College, five talented interns receiving credit for work on A Good Day to Die in their spring semester have joined the production team and are being managed remotely by Shreeman and Lou, until Shreeman’s arrival in Roanoke in mid-February. In addition, the production is receiving invaluable support from the City Manager’s office, the Roanoke’s Economic Development Division and local citizens who want to see the influx of business to the region.
“We’ve also been offered shooting locations, picture cars, housing for cast and crew and crew transportation at no cost,” Shreeman says. “The value of this generous in-kind participation is near $100K. This is no small boost to our budget.”
The film’s team has also begun work with City Councilman and Geriatric Psychiatrist David Trinkle to create a panel in association with Roanoke’s largest employer, Carilion Health System.
“The panel will address end of life questions, planning and concerns,” Shreeman says. “This is only one community outreach event we have our sights set on.”
